About Brawl Cell

Brawl Cell is a single-screen pixel platform game. Pick one of eight fighters and clear each level of monsters — they burst into fruit and gems when they go down. There are 100 levels in 10 worlds, with a boss every tenth level.

Play the campaign alone or in co-op, or battle in Versus for up to four players, with or without monsters roaming the map. Computer players can fill the empty spots.

How to play Brawl Cell

Goal

Pick a fighter and clear each level of every monster. Monsters burst into fruit and gems when they go down — grab them for points. Fall through a hole in the floor and you drop back in at the top. Take too long and it's Hurry up!: the monsters get angry, and soon after an unbeatable skull comes looking for you.

There are 100 levels in 10 worlds, and every tenth level is a boss. Each world has its own monsters, music and tricks, and it gets harder as you go: more monsters, tougher and quicker. You have 3 lives, an extra life every 50,000 points, and a health bar for each life. Once you've reached a world you can start a new game there (the 🌍 button on the fighter screen).

Controls

  • Keyboard + mouse: A D or ← → move · W ↑ Space jump (W ↑ also climb ladders) · S ↓ climb down or drop through a platform. The mouse aims; click, F or J fires; right click, Shift or K uses your special. Q E or the mouse wheel switch weapons, 1 2 3 pick one. P pauses, M turns the music on or off.
  • No mouse? If you don't aim, your shots aim themselves at the nearest monster in front of you.
  • Phone / tablet: turn your phone sideways. Left thumb: the movement stick (push up to jump or climb, down to drop through). Right thumb: hold Fire to shoot — drag it to aim — plus Jump, Special and the weapon button. You can swap the sides in the pause menu. The ⤢ button (top right, or Pause → Game size) makes the game picture smaller — Full, Large, Medium or Small — so your thumbs and the buttons sit beside the action instead of on top of it.
  • Gamepad: left stick moves, right stick aims, A jumps, B/X special, RB/RT fire, LB/Y switch weapon, Start pauses.

Fighters

RookShield Wall — A wall of light in front of you for 3 s: it stops shots and bounces them back, and blocks bumps. (every 12 s)
ZipBlink Dash — Dash where you aim. You can't be hurt while dashing, and anything you pass through takes 20 damage. (every 5 s)
VoltChain Lightning — Lightning jumps between up to 4 enemies near you: 35 damage each, and they're stunned. (every 10 s)
FrostIce Nova — Freezes everything close to you for 2.5 s. Frozen monsters take 50% more damage. (every 12 s)
GripGrapple — Fire a hook where you aim. Hook a wall to fly to it, or hook an enemy to yank it to you (10 damage + stun). (every 4 s)
GizmoTurret — Drop an auto-turret that shoots the nearest enemy for 8 s. (every 16 s)
ShadeCloak — Turn invisible for 4 s — monsters lose track of you. Your first shot out of the cloak does double damage. (every 12 s)
BloomBloom Pulse — Heals you and nearby friends by 40, wraps you in a bubble for 1.5 s and pushes monsters away. (every 14 s)

The ring at the top right of the screen fills up while your special recharges.

Weapons

You always have the Blaster, and can carry two more. Monsters sometimes drop weapons, ammo and hearts, and most levels have a weapon waiting for you. Picking up a weapon you already have tops up its ammo. When you lose a life, the weapons you carried fall out — grab them back!

BlasterNever runs out.
ShotgunSeven pellets — deadly up close.
SMGSprays bullets while you hold fire.
BowHold fire to draw: the longer you pull, the faster and harder the arrow.
SwordA big swing that also knocks enemy shots back.
BombsThrown bombs bounce, then blow up. Breaks blocks.
BazookaRockets explode on contact. Fire at your feet to rocket-jump.
LaserAn instant beam that goes through every enemy in a line.
FlamerA short stream of fire. Burns everything it touches.
MinesDrop a mine. It arms after a moment and blows up when an enemy comes close.
GrenadesLobbed grenades explode when they touch an enemy (or after a bounce or two).
BoomerangFlies out and comes back to you, hitting everything on the way. One at a time.

The worlds

1. Neon CityBlobs hop, bats swoop, archers shoot, chargers charge, spitters lob goo, ghosts float through walls, knights block with a shield. Boss: King Blob.
2. Crystal CavesCrystal bugs spit shards, moles tunnel under the floor and pop up. Boss: Crystal Golem.
3. Scrap FactoryDrones zap from the air, robots fire bursts behind a shield. Boss: Mega Mech.
4. Jungle RuinsFrogs leap up the platforms, monkeys throw coconuts. Boss: Toad King.
5. Frozen PeakPenguins belly-slide, snowmen lob snowballs that slow you. Boss: The Yeti.
6. Lava ForgeImps cast fireballs, magma blobs split in two. Boss: Magma Wyrm.
7. Space StationAliens teleport next to you, saucers fire lasers straight down. Boss: The Mothership.
8. Haunted ManorSkeletons throw bones (and get up again), pumpkins bounce. Boss: Count Phantom.
9. Desert TempleMummies get faster as they unravel (and wrap you up), scarabs swarm. Boss: Scorpion King.
10. The CoreSentinels lock on with a laser, orbs fire in an X and raise shields. Boss: The Overlord.

Watch out for

  • Crates can be shot or blown open. Spikes hurt; lava burns and bounces you out.
  • Ice is slippery, conveyor belts carry you along, springs throw you high, and crumbling platforms fall away a moment after you step on them (they grow back). On the Space Station gravity is low; the Haunted Manor is dark — you only see what's near you (and the lightning).
  • Some monsters can't be hurt for a moment: a mole underground, a shielded orb, a skeleton's pile of bones (it gets up again once — blow the bones up to stop it). The Magma Wyrm's body blocks your shots — aim for the head. Shoot down missiles and bubbles before they reach you.
  • Explosions hurt you too (a little) — but a bazooka rocket at your feet sends you flying: a rocket jump.

Saving

The game is saved at the start of every level. Pause and choose 💾 Save & quit (or just leave) and next time you can Continue. After a game over you can continue from the same level with fresh lives — your score starts again from zero.

Versus (2–4 players)

Everyone for themselves on one screen. Each round lasts 3, 5 or 8 minutes; whoever has the most kills when the time runs out wins the round. Dying to a monster, spikes, lava or your own explosion costs you a kill. The match is 1 round, best of 3 or best of 5 — first to win most of them. You come back two seconds after you go down, somewhere away from your enemies, with a short shield.

  • 👾 Monsters roam: the map's monsters keep coming back, and they drop weapons — good to farm, dangerous to ignore.
  • 🎯 Arena: no monsters; weapons (and the odd heart) appear around the map.
  • The map is either a fresh random one each round, or a level picked from the campaign.

Co-op (2–4 players)

Play the campaign together: the same levels, bosses with more health, monsters a little tougher. When you run out of lives you sit out until the next level, then come back with one. It's over when everyone is out — the host can Continue from the same level.

Playing with others

  • Against the computer: choose ⚔️ Battle with 1–3 computer players, then Versus or Co-op and how strong they are. Rookie is for your first games: slow to react, misses a lot and won't come hunting for you. Casual is a step up, Skilled a real fight, and Tough and Expert hardly miss.
  • Online: challenge someone, or open a table for up to 4. Everyone picks a fighter; the game starts when all are ready. You can add computer players to an online game too. The first player's browser runs the game, so it's smoothest when they have a good connection. If someone drops out, the computer plays for them until they're back.
  • Your name colour, the marker over your head and your health bar at the top show which fighter is yours. In Versus the clock and everyone's kills are at the top of the screen.
