Reversi being played on Neon Game Cave

About Reversi

Play reversi free in your browser. Place a disc to trap a line of your opponent's discs and flip them to your colour — the player with the most discs at the end wins.

Play on the classic 8×8 board, a quick 6×6 or a big 10×10, against the computer at five levels or a friend online.

How to play Reversi

Goal

Finish the game with more discs of your colour on the board than your opponent.

Setup

The game is played on an 8×8 board (6×6 and 10×10 are also available). It starts with four discs in the middle, two of each colour, placed diagonally. Black moves first. (In some board themes the two colours look different — the colour swatch next to each name shows which is yours.)

On your turn

  • Place one disc on an empty square so that it traps a straight line of your opponent's discs between the new disc and one you already have — across, up and down, or diagonally.
  • Every trapped disc flips to your colour. One move can flip lines in several directions at once.
  • A move that flips nothing is not allowed. The dots on the board show where you can play.

Black plays here… …both White discs flip

Passing

If you have no move that flips anything, your turn is skipped automatically and your opponent plays again. You never pass by choice.

How the game ends

  • The game ends when the board is full, or when neither player can move.
  • The player with the most discs wins. Equal numbers is a draw.

Squares are named like a map: columns a, b, c… from the left and rows 1, 2, 3… from the top, so “d3” is column d, third row.

Tips

  • Corners are gold. A disc in a corner can never be flipped back.
  • Avoid the squares right next to an empty corner — they often hand that corner to your opponent.
  • Edges are good once you can hold them, but don't rush along them.
  • Grabbing lots of discs early rarely helps. Keep your number of possible moves high and your opponent's low.
